Welcome to the fabulous fifth grade at John Mandracchia Sawmill Intermediate School! We know we will share some very special experiences this year. We are looking forward to all the learning that fifth grade has to offer.
Throughout the year, we read books and stories in many genres including realistic and historical fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, and poetry. We do many different types of writing such as memoir, personal narrative, poetry, creative writing and content area writing. We fall in love with many authors and learn to emulate them in our writing. In math we learn about whole number operations, fractions & mixed numbers, algebra, decimals, geometry, surface area, volume and graphing. Our science curriculum focuses on structures and properties of matter, engineering, earth systems, space systems, matter & energy and organism ecosystems. In social studies, we focus on the Western Hemisphere: early people of the Americas, complex societies and civilizations, European exploration, geography, government and economics.
Our year ends with Field Day and our Moving Up Ceremony. We have a special year in store for our fifth graders, and look forward to getting them prepared for their future endeavors at the Commack Middle School.
